Orienteering

'I love orienteering because it is a sport that combines physical ability with mental ability. I have also met lots of people and made many amazing friends from across Europe'

Background

Grace completed her first solo orienteering course when she was eight years old. Three years ago she started competing at national level and has now been selected to represent Great Britain and Scotland at international competitions. Grace has now been a member of the Great Britain Talent Development Squad for over a year, having been identified by British Orienteering as one of Britain's most talented junior orienteers.

Training

Training for Grace involves undergoing physiological testing twice a year to help define her training schedule for the following 6 months. She usually balances 8-12 hours of training per week with her academic work and other commitments as well as attending regular training weekends and camps overseas.

Grace also takes part in a number of other sports which broaden her physical development, and for the last three years, she has also found time to help organise a school orienteering team to take part in the Scottish Schools Championship.

Future Goals

Grace would like to perform well in national competitions this year in order to secure selection to represent Great Britain at the European Youth Orienteering Championships in Slovakia. Looking further ahead she hopes to represent Great Britain at the Junior World Orienteering Championships in 2018 or 2019
